How to get that web design job

I have been part of the recruitment process where I work for a while now and I am often asked by those who are unsuccessful to give them some tips. Read on for invaluable insider knowledge!

If you want to work in web design, the most attractive qualities for an employer are passion, creative flair and a strong knowledge of current web/SEO/accessibility standards.

Good front-end developers don't use Dreamweaver, conditional comments or hacks and are able to confidently use CSS for complex layouts (using positioning) not just for presentation. They are aware of, and using, tools such as the Firefox and IE web developer plugin, Firebug, and other Firefox addons. They have read well known industry websites such as A List Apart and Position is Everything and keep up with a number of blogs (Brainstorms and Raves). They are aware of the big names in the industry and what they're saying. At interview, they are able to converse confidently on cross browser issues and IE bugs and how to fix them.

Remember, passion for the web is often more important than experience. A passionate web designer will always have their own blog, portfolio site or personal project. So get to it!
